Ardennes-Coticule, founded in 1998, is carrying on the business activities started by the first owner, Burton, in 1865.
This includes both the operation of the slate quarries and mine and the production and sale of slate for various purposes.
Recently we received the 'Handmade in Belgium'-label. This means all of our whetstones are:
- 100% handmade
- Formed by hand and therefore unique individuals
- Made following tradition
- Locally produced
Ardennes-Coticule is the only producer of the famous Coticule and Belgian Blue Whetstone (BBW) as well as the double-sided whetstone: La Pyrénées.
Our activities are not restricted to the extraction and production of these whetstones. In order to make the very difficult and labour-intensive extraction of these whetstones viable, the slate extracted has to be exploited commercially to the maximum extent (1 tonne of slate yields 1 kg of usable whetstones). We convert slate that is not suitable for whetstones into chamotte for stoneware pipe production and pigments for the brick industry.
